The Snowy Owl 1,000 / Race 1
August 1st - September 30th, 2020
Iditarod Trail, Alaska
The Snowy Owl 1,000 was the first ever race produced in Rad Endurance history. You could call it our ’signature race’ because it represented the story and success inspired by the leader of Rad Endurance, Pete Ripmaster. In 2018, Pete won the Iditarod Trail Invitational – by foot. Therefore it only made sense to set our first virtual race on the Iditarod trail route and call it the Snowy Owl 1,000.
We opened registration for the Snow Owl 1,000 on July 1st 2020 and a few short weeks, we were able to recruit 539 racers across 83 teams to participate in our inaugural event. The camaraderie and ultimately the feedback was overly positive and, we believe, something that most if not all participants found beneficial during a surreal time in our history – the middle of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
During this time, the world has been shut down… and that includes traditional 10K’s, marathons, and triathlons that are regularly available. Additionally, most people have bene ‘holed up’ in their homes with out much social interaction, engagement or connection. The Snowy Owl 1,000 provided an outlet. It provided motivation…to get up, get out, and get going…and reconnect with nature and with people – albeit virtually.
The Snowy Owl 1,000 produced some impressive results showcased below with strong emphasis on the collective output: over 100,000 Rad Miles achieved!…which is almost an average of 200 miles per racer.
We want to thank our sponsors for standing with us to help produce and promote and successful first race. So a big thank you to University Bicycles (Boulder, CO), Go Far (Boulder, CO), inMotion Running (Boulder, CO), Ann Arbor Running Co. (Ann Arbor, MI), Kimmel HR Solutions (Asheville, NC), Jagged Edge Mountain Gear (Telluride, CO), Mountain Trip (Telluride, CO). And, of course, we want to highlight that a portion of the proceeds were donated to our charity sponsor – the symbolic Owl Research Institute.
